A persistent cough in a child can become a common thing during the cold winter months. Luckily, there are lots of quick and easy recipes that can save your little one in no time. From effective drinks and gargles, to wraps and rubs, everyone can find something what works right for their child and use it any time they need it.

1. Make some onion-garlic milk.
This one might seem a bit gross, but onions can effectively help to cure a cold, a cough, a high fever, and a sore throat. Finely chop 3 small onions and a half-head of garlic, put them in about one liter of milk, and warm it up. Cook the mixture until everything is soft, then remove it from the stove, and strain it. You can add some honey to it, to improve the taste.
2. Pineapple juice
Pineapple contains an element called bromelain, that has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Pineapple juice can reduce mucus in the throat and can relieve a cough. Though, sometimes just the juice itself might not be enough to remove this. In this case, you can add a little bit of ginger and honey to the juice. Just make sure that your child is not allergic to pineapples before using this method.
3. Ginger wrap
This powerful remedy is easy to make with ingredients that are usually present in any household. You need to combine a little bit of flour, honey, and olive oil, with one tablespoon of ground ginger (or ginger powder). Put some of the mixture on a napkin and apply it to your child’s chest using a bandage. Apply about 3 hours before bedtime.
Warning: Don’t use this on children with sensitive skin, to avoid irritation.
4. Turmeric milk
Turmeric milk is a natural cold and cough remedy that came from India and is well known for its antiseptic properties. To make it, you will need to warm up some milk and them add a spoonful of turmeric powder to it. Stir well and give it to your child before bedtime.
5. Salt on the feet
Putting warmth on the feet can also help to remove a cough. Heat up some sea salt in the microwave or in a pan — don’t overdo it, the temperature should be comfortable to your child and not burn their skin! Then apply it on your child’s feet and wrap a bandage around them. Leave it until the salt cools down, then remove everything and put warm socks back on their feet.

6. Prepare a salt water gargle
A salt water gargle can temporarily relieve the symptoms of a sore throat. All you need to do is to add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt to a glass of water (preferably, lukewarm) and stir to make it dissolve. For better results, you can also add a teaspoon of baking soda to the solution.
Tip: it is better to give this gargle to older kids to make sure they won’t swallow this water or accidentally choke.
7. Steamy shower
A steamy shower can help to relieve a nighttime cough, as it helps to loosen the mucus and congestion behind the cough. You can start the hot shower water, close the bathroom, and wait until the room gets steamy. Then your child is ready to take a shower. For better results, you can also add a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil to the shower steam.
8. Mix bananas, water, and honey
This remedy is able to soothe a bronchitis cough. First you will need boil some water, then peel the bananas and mash them into a puree. Place the puree into a pot and pour water over them. Let it steep for 30 minutes. Then let the mixture cool down and add a spoonful of honey. Give 100 ml of it to your child 4 times a day.
9. Use a cool-mist humidifier
Problems like bronchitis, colds, and flu can be relieved by using a humidifier that releases an ultra-fine cool mist into the air. Dry air can assist in the transmission of infections and viruses, while adding some moisture works as a protection from them. In addition, you can add some medications to the humidifier to make child inhale them and get better results from the procedure.
